The village of Smilyan is nestled within the pine forests of the beautiful Rhodope mountains on the border with northern Greece.
The area is rich in natural charm and is a haven for those interested in nature and walking.
The mountains have a vast network of well marked walking paths (some from the back garden on the house),
and has protected nature parks and natural phenomena including caves and natural springs.
In the summer you can bathe in the crystal clear waters of the nearby rivers.
The village itself provides all essentials with local tavernas, shops (including a pharmacy) and internet cafe.
The major town of Smolyan is approximately 20 minutes drive away and provides all the amenities of a modern Bulgarian town.
This includes a local tourist information centre.
Whilst the summer months are hot and sunny, snow is almost guaranteed between December and February
(2006/7 was the first winter anyone in the village can remember without snow),
and the major ski resort of Pamporavo is approximately 50 minutes drive away (less than 30 km).
It should be noted, that this is not an easy ride - there are no tour guides or reps and this holiday is purely for the independant traveller.
The charm of the area is that it is one of the most remote parts of Europe.
Few people speak English (although German can sometimes be helpful) and you are just as likely to encounter a horse and cart on the local road as any other form of transport.
You will normally get understood in the end and always have some stories to remember
(once we ordered two beers in the local taverna and were served one bowl of local soup).
Whatever your requirements, you will encounter hospitality and a warm welcome from the locals.
